Until now, I didn’t think it was possible to show … self-confidence without alienating myself from the very people with whom I wished to identify. But now I began to understand that the confidence I felt could only be in direct proportion to the confidence I had in the people around me. The higher I regarded others, the higher would become my self-regard, knowing I was one of them. And this makes the confidence mutual and acceptable without alienation. The same goes for importance. No one would resent your feelings of self-importance if they were certain those same feelings extended towards them and everyone else with whom you came in contact. In short, there was nothing wrong with feeling … self-confidence or even self-importance for that matter, as long as it was being extended to and proportionately shared by others, with equal pride. That way, when you rise, everyone rises with you.
